The head of the Russian Orthodox Church Patriarch Cyril first visited Antarctica.
The main purpose of the visit of Vladimir Gundyaev was to hold a liturgy in the only Orthodox church operating on the mainland, located at Bellingshausen station.
The Patriarch served a prayer service in the Church of the Holy Trinity, talked with polar explorers, wishing them “Arctic brotherhood”, and donated spiritual literature to the station. In response, the polar explorers showed the Patriarch a penguin colony on Ardley Island.
The editors of uznayvse.ru report that Patriarch Kirill arrived in Antarctica on Wednesday 17 February. Shortly before this, a historic meeting took place between the leader of the Russian Orthodox Church and Pope Francis in Cuba.
