What is paper made of?
The paper is so strong and so long ago entered our daily life that the technology of its production has long ceased to be a secret. Everyone knows that paper is made of wood, but this is not quite so. To answer the question of what the paper is made of, you should deepen your knowledge about the features of this material.
Indeed, the pulp produced mechanically from wood (sometimes from hemp and rice) can serve as the main source for paper production. So you can even make it yourself at home. But using only these components and methods, the paper will turn out to be of poor quality.
In modern industry, pulp is most often mined by chemical means, and high-quality grades of paper are composed of:
- hydrophobic sizing (for example, rosin glue), which prevents excessive spreading of ink and its bleeding from the reverse side;
- resins, starch or various adhesives that increase the durability of the paper and its resistance to mechanical stress and moisture;
- talc / chalk and kaolin, which make the paper more dense and opaque;
Variety of types
Of course, a certain type of paper implies the use of certain fillers in different proportions. For example, paper used in transformers does not contain sizing for electrical insulation, while glossy magazines pages will also include chalk, resins, and other components.
In addition, paper may contain components that do not affect the density and hydrophobicity at all. Thus, high-quality toilet paper is often impregnated with such healing substances as aloe oil and antiseptics.
